Competitions

Tomahawk Throwing is not a highly organized sport, it is much like a pick-up game of basketball at the local school yard. Gather your friends and start your own friendly competitions with each other. We find it the most enjoyable when we get together with a few friends or family members for an afternoon or evening match or two. However there are a few organizations that do sponsor official tournaments or competitions.

One is the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association. Here is a quote from their website:”Youngsters have been entertained by improving their accuracy while throwing knives and tomahawks for hundreds of years. Can you stick a hawk? Can you cut a card? If you can throw a baseball, then you can throw a tomahawk. Tomahawk and knife competitions are held at the National Championships in June and September. There are events for Juniors and Sub-Juniors. The National Youth Shoot and Family Shoot also offer throwing opportunities. Many charter clubs offer a throwing match at their annual rendezvous and special shoots.”

And the International Knife Throwers Hall of Fame.
“The International Knife Throwers Hall of Fame Association ranking system establishes an international standard by which knife and hawk throwers may measure their accuracy and versatility, and compare their skill to that of any knife and hawk throwers anywhere in the world…”

When I first talked about this there was not a huge amount of options for tomahawk throwing at an organized level. Since then the sport has exploded in the form of hatchet throwing. In Canada the term Axe can be used for what I would call a hatchet and the sport of axe (hatchet) throwing has expanded rapidly from Canada and into the United States and beyond. Axe throwing facilities are springing up in big and small cities at a steady pace.  Many of the clubs are sanctioned now by a larger governing body such as the National Axe Throwing Federation which boasts at least 16 member clubs. BATL is one of the older clubs, founded in 2006 and now has at least 12 locations under its banner.

The EuroThrowers association, originating
from Germany and France, is holding international knife- and axe
throwing Championships since more than ten years, with impressive
records in long distance axe throwing.
